Launching Oklahoma's Next Generation of Engineers
For many students, the transition to college can feel overwhelming. For future engineers and scientists, the academic rigor can be especially intense.
That’s why the Engineering Summer Bridge program at the Gallogly College of Engineering serves as a critical first step.
Engineering solutions rarely happen in isolation. Today’s engineers must collaborate across disciplines to address complex challenges in technology, infrastructure, resource security and sustainability.
Since 2007, this four-week residential program has welcomed incoming first-year students to campus each summer, providing academic preparation, professional development and community-building before their first fall semester begins. During their time in the program, students earn OU math credit, complete a team-based engineering design project under faculty mentorship and gain hands-on experience navigating the expectations of college-level coursework.
But Summer Bridge is about more than classes.
Built on three pillars – academic preparedness, professional development and community building – the program equips students with the tools to thrive. Through study sessions and structured academic support, students strengthen the foundation needed for demanding STEM coursework. By connecting with industry leaders through seminars and site visits, they begin to see how their OU degree translates into a meaningful career. And alongside more than 50 peers and dedicated student mentors, they build a network that supports them long after the program ends.
Engineering solutions rarely happen in isolation. Today’s engineers must collaborate across disciplines to address complex challenges in technology, infrastructure, resource security and sustainability. Summer Bridge reflects that reality – fostering teamwork, leadership and problem-solving from day one.
The results speak for themselves. Alumni of the program have gone on to lead student organizations, participate in undergraduate research and secure internships and careers with companies such as AT&T, Toyota, ExxonMobil, NASA and Chevron. They leave the program with a sense of belonging and the confidence to pursue ambitious goals.
